Damselfish are coral fans.

چکیده

Bustling around their reef homes, Red Sea dascyllus damselfish (Dascyllus marginatus) do quite well out of their co-habiting arrangement with hood coral (Stylophora pistillata). ‘The coral provide the fish with shelter from predators and a place for social interactions and egg laying’, says Nur Garcia-Herrera, from the Alfred-Wegener-Institut, Germany. Yet the agreement isn’t entirely one sided. ‘In return, the damselfish remove sediments from the coral surface, protect it from predators such as butterflyfish or crown-ofthorns starfish, and excrete nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus that the coral takes up’, Garcia-Herrera explains. But she and her colleagues, Amatzia Genin, from theHebrewUniversity of Jerusalem, Israel, and Sebastian Ferse and Andreas Kunzmann, from the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology, Germany, also wondered whether the gentle water currents generated by the fish’s ceaselessly fanning fins may also nurture the coral and enhance coral photosynthesis.

Risk assessment and predator learning in a changing world: understanding the impacts of coral reef degradation

Habitat degradation is among the top drivers of the loss of global biodiversity. This problem is particularly acute in coral reef system. Here we investigated whether coral degradation influences predator risk assessment and learning for damselfish. When in a live coral environment, Ambon damselfish were able to learn the identity of an unknown predator upon exposure to damselfish alarm cues co...

Occupation Dynamics and Impacts of Damselfish Territoriality on Recovering Populations of the Threatened Staghorn Coral, Acropora cervicornis

Large-scale coral reef restoration is needed to help recover structure and function of degraded coral reef ecosystems and mitigate continued coral declines. In situ coral propagation and reef restoration efforts have scaled up significantly in past decades, particularly for the threatened Caribbean staghorn coral, Acropora cervicornis, but little is known about the role that native competitors ...

Changing Patterns of Microhabitat Utilization by the Threespot Damselfish, Stegastes planifrons, on Caribbean Reefs

BACKGROUND The threespot damselfish, Stegastes planifrons (Cuvier), is important in mediating interactions among corals, algae, and herbivores on Caribbean coral reefs. The preferred microhabitat of S. planifrons is thickets of the branching staghorn coral Acropora cervicornis. Within the past few decades, mass mortality of A. cervicornis from white-band disease and other factors has rendered t...

Effects of fish grazing and damselfish territoriality

An experiment was performed on Britomart Reef (central region, Great Barrier Reef) to determine the effects of fish grazing and territoriality by the damselfish Hemiglyphidodon plagiometopon on benthic algal community structure. This pomacentrid excludes herbivorous fish from its territory, creating undergrazed patches with characteristic 'algal lawns' within coral reef lagoons. Pieces of natur...

Mutualistic damselfish induce higher photosynthetic rates in their host coral.

Coral reefs are amongst the most diverse ecosystems on Earth where complex inter-specific interactions are ubiquitous. An example of such interactions is the mutualistic relationship between damselfishes and branching corals in the Northern Red Sea, where the fish use corals as shelter and provide them with nutrients, enhance the flow between their branches, and protect them from predators. By ...
